Summative Assessment
Week 9 - Day 5
Grapheme /-tion/ Blending Practice
Practice blending words with the target phoneme as a group. Make a word on the board (you can write it or use moveable letters). Read all of the letters in the word slowly, and then practice blending the sounds together to make a word. Substitute a single phoneme in the word (preferably not the target phoneme) and blend the new word as a group. Continue this blending practice, and give students the opportunity to try independently as well.
Grapheme /-tion/ Segmenting Practice
Say a word that contains the target phoneme. Practice tapping (on your hand, arm, or jaw) as you say each of the phonemes contained in the word. Have the students count the phonemes. After they have determined the number of phonemes in the word, use an Elkonin box to segment the word into its phonemes. For example, “fiction” would be segmented as: “/f/-/i/-/c/-/tion/”
Sight Word Introduction
Place this week’s sight word on the floor with some previously learned sight words. Call out a word and have the students race to find the flashcard. This can be a competitive game, or an individual activity.
Lesson Duration: 15-20 mins
Materials Needed: Moveable letters, Elkonin boxes, previously learned sight words, sight word “cereal” flashcards
