Week 8 - Day 5

Grapheme /-tion/ Blending Practice

Practice blending words with the target grapheme as a group. Make a word on the board (you can write it or use moveable letters). Read all of the letters in the word slowly, and then practice blending the sounds together to make a word. Substitute a single phoneme in the word and blend the new word as a group. Continue this blending practice, and give students the opportunity to try independently as well.

Grapheme /-tion/ Segmenting Practice

Say a word that contains the target phoneme. Practice tapping (on your hand, arm, or jaw) as you say each of the phonemes contained in the word. Have the students count the phonemes. After they have determined the number of phonemes in the word, use an Elkonin box to segment the word into its phonemes. For example, “action” would be segmented as: “/a/-/c/-/tion/”

Grapheme /-tion/ Summative Assessment

Pass out the summative assessment worksheets. Explain to the students how to complete the worksheet by coloring all of the pictures that contain the target grapheme, leaving pictures that do not contain the target grapheme blank.

Sight Word Review

Place this week’s sight words on the floor with some previously learned sight words. Call out a word and have the students race to find the flashcard. This can be a competitive game, or an individual activity.

Lesson Duration: 25-30 mins

Materials Needed: Moveable letters, Elkonin boxes, grapheme /-tion/ summative assessment worksheet, previously learned sight words, sight words “pause, minute” flashcards
