Grapheme Review
Week 9 - Day 2
Grapheme /-ce/ Blending Practice
Practice blending words with the target phoneme as a group. Make a word on the board (you can write it or use moveable letters). Read all of the letters in the word slowly, and then practice blending the sounds together to make a word. Substitute a single phoneme in the word (preferably not the target phoneme) and blend the new word as a group. Continue this blending practice, and give students the opportunity to try independently as well.
Grapheme /-ce/ Segmenting Practice
Say a word that contains the target phoneme. Practice tapping (on your hand, arm, or jaw) as you say each of the phonemes contained in the word. Have the students count the phonemes. After they have determined the number of phonemes in the word, use an Elkonin box to segment the word into its phonemes. For example, “hence” would be segmented as: “/h/-/e/-/n/-/s/”
Sight Word Introduction
Practice writing the sight word on individual whiteboards. Write the word slowly, letter by letter. Remember to repeat the word, and have students repeat the word, as you write.
Lesson Duration: 15-20 mins
Materials Needed: Moveable letters, Elkonin boxes, whiteboards, sight word “cereal” flashcard
