Summative Assessment
Week 2 - Day 2
Long A Blending Practice
Practice blending words with the target phoneme as a group. Make a word on the board (you can write it or use moveable letters). Read all of the letters in the word slowly, and then practice blending the sounds together to make a word. Substitute a single phoneme in the word (preferably not the target phoneme) and blend the new word as a group. Continue this blending practice, and give students the opportunity to try independently as well.
Long A Segmenting Practice
Say a word that contains the target phoneme. Practice tapping (on your hand, arm, or jaw) as you say each of the phonemes contained in the word. Have the students count the phonemes. After they have determined the number of phonemes in the word, use an Elkonin box to segment the word into its phonemes. For example, “steak” would be segmented as: “/s/-/t/-/ā/-/k/”
Long A Summative Assessment
Pass out the summative assessment worksheets. Explain to the students how to complete the worksheet by coloring all of the pictures that contain the target phoneme, leaving pictures that do not begin with the target phoneme blank.
Sight Words “your” and “out” Review
Make several copies of the sight word. Use blue tack to stick the sight words all around the classroom. Let the students go around the room and hunt for the sight words. If they can find one and read it correctly, you can give them a sticker (you can also give stickers to students who make a good effort).
Lesson Duration: 25-30 mins
Materials Needed: Moveable letters, Elkonin boxes, Long A summative assessment worksheets, many copies of sight words “your” and “out” flashcards
