Letters and Sounds is a systematic phonics program developed by the UK Department for Education to help children learn to read and write through decoding. It is organized into six progressive phases that introduce sounds (phonemes) and their written forms (graphemes) in a structured sequence, emphasizing blending for reading and segmenting for spelling. The program also includes practice with tricky words and aims to build fluency, comprehension, and spelling accuracy through daily, systematic instruction.

Use The Jade Monkey with

Letters and Sounds!

Our decodable readers are fully compatible with the Letters and Sounds phonics progression. Each story follows a clear, systematic sequence that mirrors Phases 2–6, beginning with simple CVC words and single consonant sounds, then progressing through consonant digraphs, vowel digraphs, long vowels, r-controlled vowels, and advanced suffixes. New phonemes and graphemes are introduced gradually and cumulatively, while previously taught sounds are continuously reinforced. Tricky words (called “sight words” in the TJM system) are also introduced in a controlled manner that aligns with Letters and Sounds guidance. This structured progression ensures that children build decoding skills step by step, gaining confidence and fluency as they advance through each phase.

How to Use TJM with Letters and Sounds

Once students have completed Phase 2 of Letters and Sounds and can confidently blend and segment phonemes, they are ready to begin Level 1 of The Jade Monkey decodable readers. As they move through each phase of Letters and Sounds, students will learn new phonemes and graphemes that align with the increasing complexity of The Jade Monkey series. When a student reads a book with over 80% accuracy, they are ready to advance to the next book in the series. This approach allows students to progress at their own pace while reinforcing previously learned skills through repeated, meaningful practice.
